Three MAE Faculty Announced University Faculty Scholars

Arun Kota, Marie Muller, and Chengying “Cheryl” Xu, faculty members in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (MAE) at North Carolina State University, have been named University Faculty Scholars for 2024-25. The recognition, awarded to only 20 faculty members across NC State, highlights their outstanding academic achievements, research contributions, and service to the university.

The MAE department’s strong showing in this year’s cohort underscores its leadership in engineering research and education. With three faculty members selected, MAE represents the majority of the five honorees from the College of Engineering, which accounts for 25% of this year’s University Faculty Scholars.

Recognizing Excellence in Research and Teaching

Since its establishment in 2012, the University Faculty Scholars program has recognized 278 early- and mid-career faculty members who demonstrate exceptional productivity in research, excellence in teaching and mentoring, and leadership in professional and public service initiatives. Recipients retain the title for the duration of their faculty appointment at NC State and receive an increase to their base salary.

2025 MAE Faculty Scholars

  • Dr. Arun Kota, an associate professor, specializes in interfacial science and engineering, with a focus on superomniphobic materials, bioinspired surfaces, and coatings. His work has implications for self-cleaning materials, anti-fouling surfaces, and advanced fluid-repellent technologies.

  • Dr. Marie Muller, an associate professor, conducts research in acoustics and ultrasound imaging, particularly in biomedical and industrial applications. Her work advances the use of sound waves for noninvasive diagnostics and structural monitoring, with broad impacts across multiple engineering disciplines.

  • Dr. Chengying “Cheryl” Xu, a professor, is recognized for her expertise in high-temperature materials, additive manufacturing, and artificial intelligence-driven materials design. Her research contributes to aerospace, defense, and energy applications, enhancing the performance and durability of next-generation materials.

A Prestigious Recognition

Each year, NC State colleges nominate faculty for the award based on rigorous criteria, including research productivity, teaching excellence, and leadership in professional service. Senior faculty review the nominations before final selections are made.

The recognition of Kota, Muller, and Xu highlights the MAE department’s commitment to advancing engineering knowledge while mentoring the next generation of researchers and innovators.

Impact and Future Contributions

With this honor, the three faculty scholars will continue to push the boundaries of engineering research, contribute to NC State’s academic excellence, and support students through innovative teaching and mentorship. Their work reflects NC State’s mission of driving technological advancements that address global challenges.
