Speakers
Graduate Speaker – Emily Duan
Emily Duan is graduating with a PhD in Mechanical Engineering. Her dissertation, “Design, Optimization, and Testing Soft Fluidic Actuators and Sensors”, reflects her research on bio-inspired artificial muscle tissue topology and advanced soft sensor technology. Working in the Intelligent Structures and Systems Research Lab (iSSRL) under the guidance of Dr. Matthew Bryant, Emily explored the impact of artificial muscle tissue topology on system performance and collaborated with Dr. Michael Dickey’s team in the Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering Department to augment soft electrochemical sensor performance. Emily earned her B.S. in Mechanical Engineering with a minor in Entrepreneurship and Innovation from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) in 2019. Throughout her academic journey, her achievements have been recognized with accolades including the Center for Women in Technology (CWIT) Scholarship, the Provost’s Doctoral Fellowship, the College of Engineering Dean’s Doctoral Fellowship, and the NC Space Grant Graduate Research Fellowship. She also received support from the UMBC Meyerhoff program in preparation for graduate school. Beyond her research, Emily has been involved in teaching, mentoring, and STEM outreach activities with the NC School of Science and Mathematics (NCSSM) Mentorship program, the Joint Department of Biomedical Engineering summer camp, and the Science House Catalyst program.
Commencement Speaker – Tyler Hudson
