About the Dr. Hassan A. Hassan Distinguished Lecture Series:
The Dr. Hassan A. Hassan Distinguished Lecture Series was established in 2015 through the generosity of Dr. Hassan’s former students and faculty members as a way to honor his staggering impact on NC State’s Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering.
In 1962, Dr. Hassan joined North Carolina State University as a full professor and spent 53 years at NC State before beginning his phased retirement in 2015. While at NC State, he was the major adviser to 34 doctoral students, he authored more than 200 publications and has been recognized with numerous research awards; including the Alcoa Foundation Distinguished Engineering Research Award in 1987, the Alumni Distinguished Graduate Professor in 1991, the NASA Public Service Medal in 1992, the R. J. Reynolds Co. Award for Excellence in Teaching, Research and Extension in 1993, the AIAA Thermophysics Award in 1999, and the Alexander Holladay Medal For Excellence in 2004 – the highest honor bestowed on a faculty member by the NC State trustees. Dr. Hassan died at the age of 87 in 2019, but through his massive contributions to the field of Aerospace Engineering, and through the Dr. Hassan A. Hassan Distinguished Lecture Series, his legacy lives on.

A discussion on the space industry and the evolving roles of government and industry over time. The speaker will additionally discuss the overall U.S. space exploration agenda, the emergence and growth of commercial space, and the opportunities and challenges going into the future.
Bio:
Jim Maser is a distinguished aerospace executive with over 40 years of experience spanning engineering, operations and executive leadership in the space and defense industries. Throughout his career, Jim has held key leadership roles across major aerospace OEMs, playing a pivotal role in launch vehicle development, commercial spaceflight initiatives and advancing high performance propulsion systems. He served as chief engineer for several Boeing launch systems before taking executive leadership positions as president of Sea Launch, SpaceX, Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne, and L3Harris Space Propulsion and Power Systems. Jim was responsible for the design, manufacture, assembly, test and performance across a number of complex launch, propulsion and power systems.
Jim’s technical and strategic expertise makes him a sought-after leader in the industry, helping to drive innovation and operational success across various organizations. Jim has been an advisor or consultant to ULA, Reaction Engines, Orbital Sciences, Virgin Orbit, Firefly, Astra and Seagate. His influence extends beyond corporate leadership, as he has also been an active advocate for aerospace advancements and industry collaboration. Jim is a member of the National Academy of Engineering and in 2023, Jim’s contributions to aerospace engineering and leadership were recognized when he was selected as an Honorary Fellow of the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics (AIAA), one of the highest honors in the field. Jim received his engineering education from the University of Akron (B.S./M.S.) and a Master of Business Administration from the University of California, Los Angeles.
