Title:

Advances in AI-Powered Real-Time Characterization of Waste for Integrated Biorefinery Systems

Abstract:

Waste should not be viewed merely as a problem to be discarded but as an invaluable source of carbon assets. According to the EPA, ~300 million tons of municipal solid waste (MSW) are generated annually in the U.S. Nearly 50% of this waste is landfilled, representing a significant loss of the opportunity to convert its calorific value into valuable resources. However, the diverse composition of MSW poses substantial challenges to its effective conversion into high-value fuels and products. In this presentation, we will highlight innovative approaches to address the challenges of both sustainable waste management and integrated biorefineries by unlocking the potential of MSW and industrial byproducts as plentiful, cost-effective feedstocks. This includes the development of an AI-powered, real-time characterization system that utilizes visual imaging, spectroscopic analysis, and metamodeling for the rapid identification of waste fractions such as paper, plastics, food, textiles, metals, and glass, along with data-driven decision-making for appropriate processing and conversion pathways, enabling economical waste-to-resource transformation. Furthermore, we will discuss the role of interdisciplinary research, educational programs, and impactful community and industry engagement in advancing sustainable waste valorization.
