Former MAE Department Head John Bailey Passes Away

Obituary of John Albert BaileyDr. John Bailey, a beloved educator, researcher, and former head of NC State University’s Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, passed away peacefully with family by his side. His legacy in academia and his contributions to the field of engineering will be remembered by colleagues, students, and friends alike.

A native of England, Dr. Bailey earned a bachelor’s degree in pure and applied mathematics from the University of London in 1957. He went on to receive bachelor’s and doctoral degrees in metallurgy from the University College of Swansea, University of Wales, in 1960 and 1963, respectively. His academic journey began at the Georgia Institute of Technology, where he served on the faculty from 1964 to 1967, before joining NC State University.

Dr. Bailey began his tenure at NC State in 1967 as an associate professor, becoming a full professor in 1972. He later served as department head from 1984 to 1992, leading the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering with vision and dedication. He was honored with the prestigious Alexander Quarles Holladay Medal in 2001, a recognition of his excellence in teaching, research, and service. His work included extensive research for the U.S. Army, showcasing his commitment to advancing engineering knowledge and practical applications.

A mentor at heart, Dr. Bailey found great joy in guiding undergraduate students toward achieving their career aspirations. His impact as a teacher and advisor shaped the lives of countless students, many of whom went on to make significant contributions to the field.

Outside of academia, Dr. Bailey’s passions were as diverse as they were inspiring. A semi-professional cyclist during his youth in Liverpool, he carried his love of cycling with him to Raleigh, commuting to NC State on two wheels for years. He was an avid reader of science, a train and space enthusiast, and a fan of classic western films. Friends at his local pub affectionately called him “Doc,” a nod to his wisdom, humor, and warm presence.

Dr. Bailey is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Anne; his daughters, Michelle (Terry) and Sharon (David); his sister, Joan Benson (John); and numerous nephews and extended family members in Tarleton, England, and Swansea, South Wales.

A celebration of Dr. Bailey’s life will honor his dedication to education and his joyful spirit. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in his memory to provide scholarship opportunities for students in the Department of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering at NC State.
