Affiliate Faculty Guidelines
Affiliate faculty are NC State faculty in departments outside of MAE who have mechanical or aerospace related experience, research, or collaborations, and who seek Graduate Faculty standing to advise MAE graduate students. This requires a vote of the MAE Graduate Faculty for approval.
Expectations for Affiliate Faculty advising MAE students
Affiliate Faculty will:
- Read and adhere to the Statement of Mutual Expectations for MAE graduate students and faculty advisors and committees.
- Adhere to the MAE Graduate Student Handbook , policies and procedures.
- Provide financial support for Ph.D. students consistent with the standard stipend set by the MAE department (currently $36,000 annually) for the duration of their program.
- Ensure that Ph.D. or M.S. projects for MAE students have significant ME or AE relevance and technical content, through collaboration with the student’s committee.
- Complete the annual Student Activity Report (STAR) with their trainees.
- Communicate with the MAE DGP if there are any concerns regarding student performance prior to terminating student advising relationships or support.
Procedure for consideration for Graduate Faculty standing
Affiliate faculty candidates will:
- Provide a CV, including evidence of relevance to MAE.
- Give a seminar to the graduate faculty about their research.
- Provide a one page summary of their current advising experience, student load, and grant funding. Any prior relationships to MAE graduate education, such as service on committees, should be included.
The MAE Graduate Faculty will discuss the candidate and vote.

I have reviewed the MAE Graduate Statement of Mutual Expectations and Handbook, and I agree to abide by MAE department policies and expectations for the support and mentoring of MAE graduate students.
