NSF REU Site in Composites for Extreme Environments
Application
The Program:
North Carolina State University hosts a 9-week summer research program for outstanding rising junior and senior undergraduate students. We offer research experiences to work on topics related to composite materials subjected to extreme environments. The work covers topics including: work with carbon nano tubes that includes experimental and computational work, development of sensors for detecting damage in composite materials, and finally, determining the response of composite material subjected to extreme environments, including blast, impact and high temperature. In this program, undergraduates from other institutions work with faculty mentors and graduate students representing a variety of exciting research areas. The faculty team is multidisciplinary from different departments in the College of Engineering and College of Textiles.
The Experience:
Students participating in this program will have the opportunity to:
- work on independent projects with faculty mentors
- participate in research discussion sessions with faculty and students
- meet and talk to faculty from different specializations
- attend site visits with companies from local industry
- tour laboratories of different specialization areas
- present their research results at the NC State Undergraduate Research Symposium in August
- publish results from their research in a refereed journal or present them at a conference
Who Should Apply:
The program welcomes independent, motivated rising sophomores, juniors and seniors majoring in fields related to the research projects. Women, underrepresented minorities and students from colleges and universities without significant research opportunities are strongly encouraged to apply. The applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the United States or its possessions.
