Advanced Metal Forming and Tribology Laboratory [AMT_Lab]
The main research goal of the Advanced Metal Forming and Tribology Lab, led by Professor Gracious Ngaile, is to advance the understanding of plastic forming of metals through a combination of numerical solutions, analytical models, and experimentation. The current research focus stems from hydroforming, forging, stamping, to ultrasonic assisted forming. Most of these processes are studied at the micro, meso and macro scale levels. As part of metal forming process design optimization, AMT_Lab is heavily involved in studying tribological phenomena occurring within the metal forming tribopairs. The knowledgebase generated at AMT_Lab, besides reducing part development time and manufacturing cost, is expected to open avenues that will expand the capabilities and utilization of metal forming processes via new products, new part designs, hybrid processes, etc.
