Hiring Grad Students, Postdocs, and Temps
Grad Students (RAs and TAs)
All RA, TA, and RA/TA appointment requests should be submitted through Smartsheets. They are reviewed and approved by Research Admin and the MAE Grad Office.
Graduate Student Support Plan (GSSP) – The Graduate Student Support Plan is a competitive support package used to attract top students to NC State University. Graduate students that meet the requirements are eligible to receive health insurance and standard tuition support for a specified number of semesters.
Student fees are not longer allowed on research projects. Any tuition payments must follow the source of student salary/stipend funding; and paid effort on the project is required to process any tuition funding.
Postdocs
Please see the myMAE Human Resources tab, under Postdoctoral Researcher Hire Requests.
Temporary Employees, REUs, and Undergrad Students
Temps: please see the myMAE Human Resources tab, under Biweekly Temporary Employment.
REUs: The Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REU) program supports active research participation by undergraduate students in any of the areas of research funded by the National Science Foundation. REU projects involve students in meaningful ways in ongoing research programs or in research projects specifically designed for the REU program. Undergraduate student participants in either REU Sites or REU Supplements must be U.S. citizens, U.S. nationals, or permanent residents of the United States.
Please work with your research administrator to submit an invoice with the MAE Purchase Request Form when processing an REU stipend payment. These are not hourly paid workers, and students under the REU program do not have an employer/employee relationship with their PI or the university. Students are paid via voucher/check, usually 1-3 times per summer at a specified amount, from account code 56962.
Fellowships
Please keep in mind that fellowships are different than research assistantships. Fellowships may be based on merit and/or financial need,or be awarded from a sponsor for a specific purpose. Often they provide the cost of tuition and fees plus a stipend to cover living expenses. More information on Fellowships can be found from The Graduate School.
Please reach out to your research administrator and the MAE Grad Office if you have any questions about fellowships.
