High temperature piezoelectric sensors are of particular interest because of their simple structures, fast response time, and easy integration features. However, existing piezoelectric sensors operates at temperatures below 1000 \u00b0C because of the lack of high temperature piezoelectric materials. Piezoelectric single crystal YCOB is known for its stable piezoelectric properties at high temperature (~1500 \u00b0C). In this research, a shear- mode piezoelectric accelerometer using YCOB without thin film electrodes was designed, fabricated and successfully tested, for the first time, for vibration sensing applications at temperatures ranging from room temperature to 1250 \u00b0C.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-257 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/mae.ncsu.edu\/jiang\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2016\/07\/HT-600x402.jpg\" alt=\"HT\" width=\"600\" height=\"402\" srcset=\"https:\/\/mae.ncsu.edu\/jiang\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2016\/07\/HT-600x402.jpg 600w, https:\/\/mae.ncsu.edu\/jiang\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2016\/07\/HT-768x514.jpg 768w, https:\/\/mae.ncsu.edu\/jiang\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2016\/07\/HT-992x664.jpg 992w, https:\/\/mae.ncsu.edu\/jiang\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/7\/2016\/07\/HT.jpg 1014w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p class=\"center\" style=\"text-align: center\">High temperature test setup (temperature up to 1300 \u00b0C)<\/p>\n<p>Acoustic emission (AE) sensing is a rapidlly growing method for testing a braod spectrum of wear and fatigue in mechanical, aerospace, and civil structures. YCOB was used to fabricate an AE sensor for high tempearture applciations. During Hsu\u2013Nielsen tests with a steel bar, this YCOB acoustic sensor showed the ability to detect zero-order symmetric and antisymmetric modes of lamb wave at 30 and 120 kHz, respectively, as well as distinguish a first-order antisymmetric mode at 240 kHz at elevated temperatures up to 1000\u00b0C.
